I. LOVE. YOU.
Three little words, that’s all it is. So simple, yet at the same time it can be so hard to find how to express love.
We all remember the first time we heard “I love you” from a significant other, it’s a moment you never forget! Perhaps you were younger, it was your high school sweetheart shakily saying it to you. Maybe you were in college, and it was the beginning of your first long term relationship. Or you vividly remember the first time you said it to your now spouse. Regardless of when or how it was said we can all agree that hearing those words can be an exciting, life changing experience.
For some expressing their love to others is easy, they have no problem saying or showing their love. Others, however, do not find it as easy. For them it is a struggle to find how to express love. While they may know for certain that they love someone they cannot express it well.
This may be because humans all express and feel love in different ways. Knowing how to express love yourself in the best way and knowing how your significant other or important people in your life feel love can be essential to lasting and happy relationships. Here are a few of the most common ways people express love, perhaps you can attempt a new one to make that special someone feel extra loved.
how to express love: a quick guide
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
When you think of expressing love for others what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For many people when they think about how to express love they would normally think of saying it directly, i.e. verbal communication. The act of saying “I love you” towards someone you love. Saying “I love you” is often the only way people know how to express themselves, so it has become the most common and well known way to express love. Although it is the most popular method, this is by no means the only nor effective way. While some people thrive on verbal affirmation of their love, others do not receive this well.
QUALITY TIME
Some people are not good with words, but this does not mean they don’t know how to express love. They are great at just being there for people! A lot of times this can be how someone shows there love. The act of someone spending one on one quality time with someone can often be much more meaningful then hearing them say “I love you”. Taking time out of your schedule and planning to be with the one you love and just appreciate them can often express love so much better than words could ever dream of.
random ACTS OF kindness
For some they show their love to others by doing things for them, this does not mean necessarily spending money on them. When it comes to expressing love this is called acts of kindness because it is doing a kind act for them when unsolicited. Washing their car, doing the laundry, making them breakfast in bed, helping them with that project they’ve been procrastinating on. Whatever it may be, it comes from a place of love, they see something that you need help with and in wanting to show you they care, they decide to just do it for you. This can often be over looked as an act of love but it can be one of the most powerful expressions as it is so unexpected.
GIFTS
This is not the typical gift giving associated with valentines day or birthdays. Nor is it a showy display of how much money you can spend on something. Giving gifts dates back centuries as one of the greatest ways to show someone how much they mean to you. Buying something meaningful for someone just because, or because it reminded you of them can say so much! When a surprise gift is gifted as an act of love it can have much more meaning than a lavish gift purchase purely for a holiday.
