For our next instalment of DIY with flowers we are going to show you just how easy it is to make a fun fall decoration!
A pumpkin vase is a great addition to your doorstep decoration or to your fall inspired tablescape. Its color options and versatility make it a great decor option for Halloween all the way to Thanksgiving and this project is so easy it’s one even the kids can enjoy. So let’s get started.
1. Select Your Pumpkin
First you will want to take a trip to your local pumpkin patch, or if there are no pumpkin patches in your city then head to the nearest grocery or hardware store that is selling pumpkins. Then carefully choose the perfect pumpkin to make your vase. Pumpkins come in all shapes, sizes and colors! The color is completely up to you, we love a creamy white pumpkin for a more sophisticated tablescape, or a traditional deep orange pumpkin for the thanksgiving dinner table. When selecting your pumpkin color keep in mind what color the flowers you will be keeping in there will be as well, as this may sway your decision. As far as shape and size, you want the pumpkin to be about 8 inches in diameter, not too large that it takes up the entire table but not too small that you are unable to fit a decent amount of flowers inside. Once you have selected your pumpkin you can move on to step 2.
2. Select your flowers
Which flowers you decided to use in your pumpkin is completely up to you! We love to see the deep reds and oranges to keep with the traditional fall theme, but we’ve seen beautiful arrangements done with pastels such as peonies and hydrangeas. Sunflowers, gerberas, or even roses make a great choice for pumpkin vases, especially as they are typically long stemmed and easy to work with. 3. Cut and clean your pumpkin
Cut across the top of the pumpkin in a straight of a line as possible, remove the lid of the pumpkin. You can save this as some people like to use it in their decorations as well. Once the top is removed clean out the contents of the pumpkin, making sure all seeds and any wet pieces have been removed. You can rinse the pumpkin out with water to be sure, then thoroughly dry the inside before proceeding.
4. Arrange Flowers in Pumpkin
Place a small jar, or glass inside the pumpkin, depending on the height of your chosen pumpkin you may be able to fit a vase inside, if not a glass or mason jar will work perfectly! Fill the jar about half way with water and add flower food. Carefully place the jar inside the pumpkin. Then cut and arrange your flowers inside the jar, you can add extra greenery or leaves to make the bouquet look fuller if necessary, this is where you get to use your creativity and make the arrangement your own. The flowers should last about 7 days in the water.
5. Enjoy!
Now you get to enjoy your beautiful creation, add it to your dinner table or to you halloween decorations for a sophisticated and creative touch!
